Honeymoon Destination Under $2500: The Dominican

Happy Good Friday to all!

I want to share the last installment in our four part series on affordable honeymoon destinations. This week, we have given you spots to honeymoon that will cost you less than $3,000. So far we have covered Belize, Morocco and San Miguel de Allende. All are completely different trips – some are beachy, some are exotic and some are cultural. Today, we want to offer you the ultimate in a relaxing honeymoon, so we are talking about the Dominican.

This is one of the larger Caribbean countries. It is located in the island of Hispaniola, in the Greater Antilles archipelago of the Caribbean region. It is the second largest Caribbean nation by area. The Dominican Republic has had one of the fastest-growing economies in the Americas. Recent growth has been driven by construction, manufacturing, tourism, and mining. It is well-known to be a cost-effective location for honeymooners.

How to get there? Where you fly into can make a difference. It’s typically cheaper to fly into Santo Domingo than Punta Cana (a quick search found fares around $300 from New York, $450 from Chicago). If you sign up for Google Flights, you can track several potential routes to determine when the fare will be the lowest.

Where to stay? Dominican Honeymoon packages are known for their value. The all inclusive resorts are extremely affordable. We are going to focus on Punta Cana, since that is the cheapest location to fly into. Punta Cana is located on the eastern tip of the Dominican Republic. It is cover with beautiful white beaches and is often referred to as the Coconut Coast, because 30-miles of beachfront are lined with coconut trees. We recommend an adults only resort – several of those are the following:

When you book these resorts, make sure you tell them it’s your honeymoon and they often include special honeymoon bonus packages for free that include a plate of fruits, bottle of sparkling wine, special turn down services and a discount on spa treatments. These honeymoon packages will vary by resort. The best thing about all inclusives is that you have your choice of restaurants, drinks and activities. You don’t have to worry about a thing – because it’s all included in the price. Prices right now range from $300-$400 per night.

We put together some of our favorite swim pieces for this tropical destination:

What to do? Some of the most popular honeymoon activities in the Dominican Republic include island snorkeling, a catamaran tour, yacht excursions, speed boat excursions, deep sea fishing, ziplining and cigars. The Dominican is one of those places where relaxation is plentiful, but there are also tons of activities to partake in if you are your new hubby want to get out. The resorts will all offer tour packages for any of the activities listed above. We would also be okay if you and your new hubby just want to lay out in the sun all day – or enjoy a day at the spa.

What to eat? Sample locally produced coffee and chocolate. Cigars are also a Dominican specialty. No other country cooks up better comfort food than the Dominican Republic. This country is predominantly a tri-creole culture: indigenous Taino, African from African slave ancestry, and Spanish. If you want to venture outside of the resort to sample some of the local food, a very popular eatery is called Deliciosis, located in the Plaza Punta Cana – it is open 24-hours a day!

What to wear? Bring your swimsuits, cover-ups, sunscreen and flip flops. And maybe one or two nice outfits if you and your hubby want to try some of the nicer restaurants in the resort. No need to get fancy here- we would also bring some tennis shoes if you decide you want to partake in an excursion.
